Science Communication
I believe that science communication is of the utmost importance - without it, many of our research efforts could be rendered inconsequential. Though my PhD is nascent, I have many goals for the outreach I will conduct throughout, and I am in the midst of creating a plan of action to make my work accessible to the scientifically underrepresented. The simple vector piece at the top of this page, based on a photograph from Dylan Winkler (see Home), is intended to represent bridging this gap.
Here are some of the incredible organizations for which I have worked previously, am plugged in currently, or am now actively involved with having officially begun my PhD:
Beyond these opportunities, I have many other plans and ideas, and will be updating the website accordingly as they come to fruition! Check out some of my science writing and news below:
Here are some of the incredible organizations for which I have worked previously, am plugged in currently, or am now actively involved with having officially begun my PhD:
- Oakes Museum of Natural History: based at Messiah University. An amazing museum, where I was lucky enough to work for 4 years, giving tours, seminars, designing displays, and generally learning about the specimens and curation techniques!
- Sigma Zeta Science and Mathematics Honor Society: based at Messiah University. As president, I led our undergraduate team in judging elementary/middle school science fairs, and coordinated seminars in which alumni would return to discuss their research.
- Skype a Scientist: an awesome way to link scientists with classes or families. You can find me on here and book time with me!
- Girls in Science: a fantastic initiative through the Burke Museum, which aims to connect female scientists to middle and high school girls who may lack STEM role models/resources.
- Science Explorers: a student-registered organization through the University of Washington, in which grad students work with elementary classes to teach science-oriented classes!
- Youthforce: a teen workforce readiness program of the Boys & Girls Club in King County, which includes internships and connection events.
Beyond these opportunities, I have many other plans and ideas, and will be updating the website accordingly as they come to fruition! Check out some of my science writing and news below:
Science writing
I wrote an article with Current Conservation on owl banding and the value of banding stations! Check it out here. Amazing artwork by Aindri Chakraborty.

Join me for a trip back to the Azores to listen to me wax poetic about seabirds in the Atlantic! I wrote a guest blog with Dispatches from the Field about my work with storm-petrels and shearwaters - you can check out the link here. Prepare to hear about fluffy nestlings and bird poop: two staples of ornithology!

Hummingbird talks
I gave a talk on hummingbirds with an elementary school! You can check it out below.
